ESO Headquarters in Garching near Munich will open its doors for the public from 10:00 - 17:00

On Saturday, October 22, 2005, the ESO Headquarters in Garching near Munich will open its doors for the public from 10:00 - 17:00.

As in earlier years, Open House Day is organised together with the other research institutes in the area. As usual, (mostly) German-speaking staff members will provide information about ESO and the ongoing work at this organisation.

Special attention will be given to the public presentation of the exciting, recent research results from ESO's various telescopes, in particular the VLT.

The following activities are presently planned:

  • An exhibition featuring the ESO Very Large Telescope, the new Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) project and future possibilities for very large telescopes now being studied at ESO

  • Video presentations about ESO science and technology in the auditorium

  • A Video Conference with ESO astronomers, working at the VLT at Paranal during the morning

  • Overview of the activities of the ESA/ESO Space Telescope European Coordinating Facility (ST/ECF) that is located at the ESO HQ

  • Demonstration of an extremely light-sensitive CCD (Charge Coupled Device) camera
    Information about Employment Opportunities at ESO

  • A planetarium show with professional planetarium people with a Zeiss Starlab

  • Coffee and soft drinks in the ESO cafeteria; here the ESO Posters and other informative material are also available (special offer)
